What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation, commonly referred to as SMP in the medical field, is a common way to alleviate hair loss. The procedure involves implanting natural pigments under the scalp’s epidermis (the outer skin layer) with the help of microneedles. After the patient’s skin recovers from the operation, the implanted pigments closely resemble hair follicles, similar to a buzz cut.
In addition, the procedure also provides shading to simulate and make up for density loss for patients suffering from diffuse thinning. Scalp micropigmentation is also one of the go-to solutions for dealing with surgery scars, burns and birthmarks, as it can even out the overall look of the hair and make the blemishes almost indistinguishable to the naked eye.
How Scalp Micropigmentation works?
The scalp micropigmentation procedure itself only affects the skin, so, to the uninitiated, it can seem similar to tattooing. The difference, however, is that, unlike tattoos, the colour pigments used in micropigmentation never go beyond the skin’s thin outer layer (the epidermis). Scalp micropigmentation procedures with transplants are very similar in nature to micro-blading eyebrows. However, rather than emulating the appearance of individual hair strands, the method relies on an artistic approach called pointillism to introduce dots across the scalp, making the hair look fuller.
For men, the result is similar to that of a buzz cut. For women, the go-to approach utilises dark pigments applied in microdots to cover the scalp and alleviate the visible effects of thinning hair follicles.
Our Scalp Micropigmentation Procedure
Before starting each micropigmentation session, the scalp is thoroughly cleansed, and the treatment areas are outlined. This serves as an indication of where the hairline will begin post-procedure. Then, our experts will use a microdotting device, utilising between one and six needles, none of which will penetrate further than the epidermis (less than a tattoo gun). The end result will blend together with the rest of your scalp and appear extremely similar in appearance to natural hair. As noted above, micropigmentation is virtually indistinguishable to the naked eye unless one is a trained professional.

- Following the procedure, some clients may experience slight redness or swelling of the scalp. This will pass in a short timeframe.
- SMP patients need to avoid exposing their scalp to moisture and direct sunlight within the first week following the procedure. Furthermore, all forms of strenuous physical activities are to be avoided entirely for up to 8 days.
