How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Last?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a popular non-invasive procedure to address hair loss problems. SMP makes your hair look full by creating tiny, layered black dots so your hair will have more depth and look more defined.

But you should remember that scalp micropigmentation can’t stop hair loss. It basically just applies pigments or colourants to your scalp to mimic the natural look of hair roots.

Scalp micropigmentation is known to be effective but how long will the results last?

Different factors come into play when it comes to determining how the results of scalp micropigmentation will last. But generally speaking, the treatment is expected to last at least six years depending on how it was performed and how you take care of it over the years.

Scalp micropigmentation is performed over 2 to 3 sessions with an interval of 10 to 14 days between sessions for the best results. The results of the first session will show how well your scalp has retained the pigment.

You might notice some fading after the first session. But don’t be alarmed because that’s normal. You’ll see more density and fullness once you’ve completed your second and third sessions.

Will Scalp Micropigmentation Fade?

Although SMP is expected to last for years, it will fade at some point. Several factors affect the degree of fading, such as how your body responds to the procedure, the quality and type of the ink used. Most people require a touch up four to six years after they’ve had the procedure.

Generally speaking, there are three types of fading.

Mid Treatment Fading

Every time you go in for a scalp microblading session, you’ll be asked to return to the clinic one week after for a follow-up session. The duration gives your scalp enough time to heal and allow the pigment to settle in your skin.

Settling Fading

This level of fading takes place between three to six months after your treatment session. As you know, scalp micropigmentation involves creating dots with pigment in your scalp. Over time, these dots become lighter, less sharp, and smaller.

Long-term Fading

This type of fading usually happens three years after you’ve had the procedure. The degree of long-term fading depends on the technique used to perform the procedure, the environment where you work and live, and how you maintain the effects after undergoing the SMP procedure.

Why Does Scalp Micropigmentation Fade?

Scalp micropigmentation fades because of several factors. It also varies from one person to another. One of the most common ones is sun exposure. Exposing your scalp for extended periods of time to ultraviolet rays will trigger fading.

Where you get your scalp micropigmentation also affects how long you get to enjoy its results. Find a centre that employs highly trained, skilled, and experienced specialists. The type of needles used and pigment applied also affects how soon it’ll fade. For example, bigger dots and darker tones take longer to fade than smaller dots and lighter shades.

Another crucial factor that should be considered is your skin tone. If you have a darker skin tone, there may be no need to reapply since you won’t really notice the colours fade.

Can You Prevent Scalp Micropigmentation From Fading?

There’s no general rule or definite method to stop scalp micropigmentation from fading since it all comes down to two uncontrollable factors, your immune system and ultraviolet rays.

But there are things you can do to minimise fading.

  • Don’t engage in activities that cause you to sweat a lot.
  • Don’t scrub your head too much.
  • Don’t swim for 30 days.
  • Avoid exposing yourself too long to the sun.
  • Use sunscreen or wear a hat to protect your scalp whenever you’re outdoors.
  • Don’t use products that contain alcohol or bleach on your scalp.
  • Use a non-greasy and mild moisturiser for your scalp.
  • Get a retouch every few years to enjoy the effects of SMP for a longer period.

What Are The Benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation is growing in popularity because of the many benefits it has to offer.

  • The effects can last for years to come with proper care and maintenance.
  • It’s a safe and fast procedure.
  • It’s minimally invasive.
  • It gives you natural looking hair.
  • It makes you look younger.

Who Can Get Scalp Micropigmentation?

Anybody who struggles with hair loss may be a good candidate for scalp micropigmentation. However, there are certain factors that need to be considered first.

The level of your hair loss as well as your goals are two of the many things that should be taken into account before you go through the procedure.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation The Same As Tattoo?

Scalp micropigmentation is different from a traditional tattoo. The needles used for the latter are bigger than those used for SMP and that means they go deeper into the skin.

However, a traditional tattoo and SMP will fade if you expose yourself to ultraviolet light for an extended period. That’s why you should always use sunscreen or wear a protective covering whenever you go outdoors.

Final Thoughts

Scalp Micropigmentation is an excellent solution if you’re looking to find a way to make the hair on your scalp look thicker. The effects of the procedure can last for several years. However, you should remember that fading is inevitable but there are things you can do to minimise it.
